简介
PhaBuilder (Beijing Weigou Gongchang Biotechnology) is a synthetic biology company specializing in the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) using proprietary extremophile bacteria. Founded in 2021 as a Tsinghua University spin-off by Professor Guoqiang Chen and his team, the company is headquartered in Beijing.
PhaBuilder utilizes Next-Generation Industrial Biotechnology (NGIB) to produce PHA without the need for sterilization, significantly reducing costs and energy consumption. Its core products include various PHA materials for applications ranging from food packaging and disposable cutlery to medical implants.
The company operates through strategic joint ventures to scale production. In 2022, it partnered with Angel Yeast to form Weiqi Biotechnology in Yichang, which in 2026 completed China’s first 10,000-ton scale PHA production line. In 2024, it partnered with Chuanning Biotechnology to form Weining Biotechnology, focusing on medical-grade and bulk PHA materials.
PhaBuilder has secured approximately $99.8 million in funding from investors including HongShan and the Agricultural Fund of China. It is currently active, with recent 2026 developments including the launch of a “bio-based polymer paper-based barrier developer alliance” to promote industrial-scale applications of its materials.
