Nagase & Co., Ltd. is a Japanese chemical trading company and manufacturer founded in 1832 and headquartered in Tokyo. It operates globally across three segments: Materials, Electronics, and Life Sciences. The company functions as a trading firm, R&D entity, and manufacturer, providing solutions for industries including semiconductors, food, and pharmaceuticals. Nagase Viita Co., Ltd. (formerly Hayashibara) is a wholly-owned subsidiary and the core of the group’s biotechnology business. Founded in 1883, it specializes in fermentation and enzyme technologies, producing ingredients like trehalose for food, personal care, and pharmaceutical applications.
Recent developments in 2025–2026 include the acquisition of SACHEM’s Asia high-purity chemistry operations and Asahi Kasei Pharma’s diagnostic reagent business. The group is actively expanding its semiconductor materials capacity, particularly for AI-related applications, and has established a new bio-research laboratory in the U.S. to accelerate material development.
