Fermelanta, Inc. is a Japan-based biomanufacturing/synthetic biology startup engineering fast-growing E. coli to ferment and produce plant secondary metabolites (rare compounds) via multi-step biosynthetic pathways enabled by introducing 20+ heterologous genes and tightly controlling enzyme expression. Founded in 2022; headquartered in Nonoichi, Ishikawa, with Tokyo and a Silicon Valley (Palo Alto) presence. It is privately held (not listed). Series A (end of Aug 2025) raised JPY 2.0 billion led by Universal Materials Incubator and Beyond Next Ventures; seed was about JPY 800 million. Total funding reported JPY 4.8 billion.
