East-West Seed (EWS) develops and supplies locally adapted tropical vegetable hybrid seeds and related farming knowledge for smallholder farmers, working through local seed growers and distributors. Core products are vegetable seed varieties across many tropical crops; it uses advanced plant-breeding tools and maintains 30 R&D setups, with hybrid-development cycles described as taking up to 10 years. Founded in 1982 by Simon N. Groot (with Filipino seed trader Benito Domingo), it has a global footprint (direct presence in 15 countries, exports to 86) and reports 742 varieties on 86 crops and 2.8K+ employees, plus training of 1M+ farmers via its Knowledge Transfer Foundation.
